New York city-based telecommunications company TCC Teleplex has installed Manhattan's first web-enabled payphone as part of a 30 day test. For 25 cents per minute, users can send e-mail or surf the web.

Like a conventional payphone, it has a handset, coin slot and number keypad for dialing. In addition, the phone's bright yellow case also holds a 12 inch video screen, a black keyboard, a credit card slot and a digital camera to include photos in e-mails being sent. For speedy Internet access, the phone boasts a DSL connection. The phone also features a red "panic" button that instantly connects the users with New York's 911 emergency service.

The phone will remain at the southwest corner of West 46th Street off Fifth Avenue until mid-March.
